Helen Frye

January 18, 1923 — March 13, 2020

Helen Marie Frye was born on January 18, 1923, on the family farm west of Haddam, Kansas, to John and Mary (Fencl) Skupa, and was one of eight children born to this union.  Helen grew up around Haddam, graduating from Haddam High School in 1941. One July 22, 1945, she married Glenn E. Frye in Belleville, and to this union of 51 years, two children were born.

Helen worked at the Haddam Post Office for 32 years, retiring as Postmaster. After retirement, she and Glen owned and operated the Haddam Café for several years. In her free time, Helen enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and working on crossword puzzles.

Helen passed away on March 13, 2020, with family at her side, at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville, at the age of 97 years, 1 month and 26 days.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glenn in 1996, her brothers Frank, Ernie, Ed & Evan Skupa, and her sisters Bessie Stolzenburg, Sylvia Kvasnicka and Elsie Skupa.

She will be forever remembered by her children, Glenda Mullen and her husband Mike of Lincoln, Nebraska and Jay Frye and his wife Donna of Haddam. Helen is also survived by her grandchildren, Phillip Mullen of Des Moines, Iowa; Todd Frye and his wife Rachel of Marysville; Mitchell Frye and his wife Chelsea of Chicago; Bryan Frye of Belleville; and Clint Frye of Livermore, California; great-grandchildren Kayenta, Dahlia and Astoria Frye; many nieces and nephews, and a community of friends.

Direct cremation was chosen, there will be no visitation. Private Family services will be held at a date later this spring.

The family has requested memorials to the City of Haddam, designated the Haddam Café fund, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
