Maureen Kesl

August 29, 1928 — July 19, 2018

Maureen Agnes Kesl (Hurley) was born to James and Agnes (Sheridan) Hurley on August 29, 1929, in Concordia Kansas, and passed away on July 19 th , 2018, in Belleville, Kansas, at the age of 89. Maureen was the first of two children, with Jim Hurley being her younger brother.  Maureen graduated from Republic High School in 1946, and from nurses training in 1949.

Maureen met Leo Kesl at a dance while he was visiting his parents.  They were married on November 15th, 1950. Maureen and Leo had four children, Judy, Steven, Peggy, and Robert.

Maureen worked for a few years with Republic County as the County Health Nurse. She would visit rest homes, people who were being cared for at home and more. She often taught baby classes, teaching young parents how to best care for their children. She was instrumental in helping to get Red Cross swimming lessons taught to anyone who wanted, at the Republic County Pool.  She took time off from her nursing career to care for her mother, then after that, she supported Leo by working with him in the Jewelry store in Belleville.

Maureen was active with her children and husband with camping, hunting, fishing and just enjoying the out of doors in general. Mom was Leo’s wingman for backing up the various boats, campers, RV’s mowers and yard sale treasures.

After all the children left home Maureen and Leo joined several other friends by taking a caravan of RV’s to Alaska. They enjoyed trips to California, Hawaii, Barbados, Las Vegas and many different camping sites throughout the west.

In later years Maureen loved to watch and cheer for her K-State teams. She also enjoyed making quilts and crocheting. She even taught some classes through Belleville’s Open University on Tatting. While in her later years she used her skills to knit hats and blankets for babies and donated them to various charities. She was an avid reader and a constant patron of the Belleville Public Library.

Other fond memories are her love for the outdoors and some of the fun adventures of fishing and camping with her family at Lovewell Lake, Estes Park, Lake of the Woods and many others.

Maureen is survived by her four children, grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 9:00pm on Friday, July 20 th , with Rosary at 7:00pm, at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home.
